About Kanpo herbal medicine
Kanpo herbal medicine in York
Sylvia Schroer Lic. Ac., MBAcC, Kanpo, BSc Hons (Psych), MSc (Complementary Therapy Studies).
Kanpo literally means 'way of the Chinese' in Japanese. Like acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine has evolved into different traditions and approaches. Kanpo is one of main methods of Chinese herbal medicine to be practiced in the world today.
Kanpo was developed in Japan where it is currently widely used. The herbs, which are based on traditional formulas that have been used for centuries, are convenient to take and have an excellent safety record.
Diagnosis is based on the identification of a 'sho' or pattern displayed by the patient. Diagnosis is based on traditional methods including an evaluation of symptoms from a Chinese medical perspective; tongue diagnosis; pulse diagnosis (pictured) and abdominal diagnosis. All this information, when taken together, helps to build a more complete, holistic picture of the person's underlying health condition and to identify which imbalances need to be addressed to regain optimal health.
